Windows XP and a HP laserjet printer 1200 series

I have loaded Windows XP and Office XP and the drivers disk for the 1200 series HP Laserjet printer. In addition to this I have downloaded a 'communication patch' for Windows XP supplied by HP on their website and the printer still seems to respond in a flaky manner at times. At times it will only print a certain number of pages of a particular document. At other times it works flawlessly. There seems to be no paticular pattern to the printer's antics. It seems to have a complete mind of its own in this regard. I have spoken to HP support and they didn't even seem to know about the patch that was available for Windows XP. I am guessing that the engineers from the respective companies are still working on this problem. But for now it is rather inconvenient. Please respond if you have found anything similar. Thank you in advance.
