I too had problems upgrading from Win98 to XP because I didn't first uninstall Norton
Internet Security and Antivirus. But, after reading Symantec's detailed instructions,
I was able to get it installed just fine.
The trick is to do EVERY step they have listed. I didn't (thinking I knew everything)
and it took several attempts. I finally had everything removed from my registry
and hard drive, but still had a program group called Norton Anti Virus. For some
reason, the install program saw this and assumed that I already had portions of it
installed. Once I had EVERYTHING removed, it worked slick. ....and still is.....
