Question XP temporarily freezing

XP is temporarily freezing all the time no matter what is running. It is only temporary 
as alt+crtl+del will get it going again. It seems as it gets stuck in some process 
or thread and wont't switch out. XP is a clean install with only power tools installed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
