XP hangs during boot

Hi,
I really hope some of you guys out there can help me, since this problem drives me
nuts.
When I switch on the PC to boot XP, the machine will hang every time (the blue bar
on the start screen stops moving, HD LED lit). This also happens in safe mode from
time to time. After a few attempts booting the machine, I'll finally make it to the
desktop, where everything is fine. Even rebooting is not a problem anymore.
This problem only occurs if the PC has been switched off for quite a while, say a
few hours, so it's gotta have something to do with stuff in the memory (?).
I checked all the hardware, deactivated devices, nothing changed. I first suspected
it has something to do with my board (Abit KT7-RAID) and the RAID driver, but I made
sure I got the latest drivers. The only thing I didn't do is to install the RAID
driver during installation, but XP detected the controller correctly so I thought
everything was okay.
Has anybody had similar problems? Any hints or helpful comments? Your help would
be greatly appreciated.
P.S.: My guess is that XP tries to address a device during boot, which often fails.
XP will only boot normally when this device is finally addressed correctly, but what
I really don't understand is that the PC *remembers* that this device is okay now,
even after rebooting the machine after being switched off for a few minutes. Argh!!
