Read-Only Problem with XP

I am using Windows Xp. For some reason the folders have all become READ-ONLY. I try to remove the READ-ONLY attribute yet it always remains READ-ONLY! I have no idea why the folders suddenly became read-only. Has anyone encountered this problem before or does anyone have any solutions?....I tried resetting all folders, yet I still have the problem. For some reason, when I try to change a folder properties (ie. remove READ-ONLY check mark) and apply, it remains READ-ONLY. (Another question: when selecting READ-ONLY, one can put a square or a check mark in the box...does anybody know what the difference is?).....I am logged in as administrator..yet it still cannot be changed. The only reason I noticed this problem was when I tried to receive a file through MSN Messenger...it said that I couldn't save the file because the folder was read-only. I wanted to switch folders but then I realized that all folders were read-only! However, I am able to download drivers, etc. This is really weird..why is the problem only occuring through messenger? Thanks for your help!
