Auto-dialing the Internet

From time to time, my computer automatically connects to the Internet when it's unattended.
I'm not sure what's causing it. My virus definitions are up to date. Does anyone
know what might cause this? Any ideas how to see what process is sending the request
to dial-up networking to connect?
