I just installed XP and I had a problem where my sound card (es 1868) was properly installed with xp drivers and had absolutelly no conflicts reported but still could not emit sounds... I solved the problem by disabling (in the hardware setup) my network card and restarting the computer. Upon start-up, sound came out of the speakers and when I enabled the network card again, no conflict appeared. Apparently there was a conflict between my sound and network card even though windows didn't report anything... Hope this helps.
