The error is related to a corruption of some files in directory \windows\srchasst\mui\0409.
The files in this directory are all XSL and XML files, needed to build the various
search dialogs. Why the files become corrupted is not clear to me.
The problem is solved by replacing all files in this directory with uncorrupted versions.
Such versions can be obtained in two ways:
1. Install Windows XP on another computer or partition and get the files from there.
2. Obtain the files directly from the Windows XP CD-ROM. Go to the directory \i386
on the CD-ROM and give the following command:
expand -r balloon.xs_ c:\windows\srchasst\mui\0409\
This puts the file balloon.xsl in the correct directory. Repeat this for the other
files in \windows\srchasst\mui\0409.
Make also a backup copy of these files somewhere, since the files become corrupted
again during the search process. Always replace the files again before starting a
search within the Explorer.
