Thanks to all who have supplied information! After downloading the Ravissent addon
for Windows Media Player, and an update from Roxio, I can now do most of what I want:
rip audio CD's to MP3 or WMA, and burn MP3 to CD or WMA to Audio format. I believe
that much of my difficulty arose from XP finickyness about ripping and burning unless
the ripping/recortding software is very compliant.
