I have the exact same setup in my house. one box is running winXP and win98SE.
My setup is also exactly the same, except without the router. What I did was set-up
a peer-to-peer network. Then, on the winXP box, right click on "Network Places",
go into the properties of the nic, go into advanced, and click on the box to enable
internet connection sharing. run through the wizard. then, on the win98 machine,
reset the tcp/ip to obtain automatically. reboot the machine and run through the
wizard. That's what I did, good luck
