I had a very similar problem the other week. (Only I had put the dir on the disk
full of files.) The dir suddenly came up empty and couldn't be removed!! It turned
out to be a corrupted NTFS MFT (Master File Table). Use Norton or CHKDSK or similar
and see if it reports a fault with the MFT.
