I have a suggestion about Making Sure the Correct HAL is Installed:

I have ran into this problem a few times and found a way around it. When you boot off of the Windows XP or Windows 2000 cd, there is an option for a repair or install, select install. Then there will be a "where to install" option, select the drive with the OS already on it and continue. It will find the installed os and give you a second opertunity to select Repair. This second option will reset the HAL. The complete reinstall will reset the HAL but it will also reset the registery forcing you to reinstall all your programs. The first repair only checks for missing files
