I found that even associating the file types with my preferred picture editor (Paint
Shop Pro) did not stop pictures from opening in Windows Picture & Fax Viewer. I
discovered the workaround below, which does not require editing the registry. Substitute
tour favorite picture editor for "Paint Shop Pro" in these instructions:
1. In Explorer, find a file of the type you want to associate with Paint Shop Pro,
for example a .jpg
2. Right click its file name.
3. Click "Open with". On the menu that pops up, DON"T click "Paint Shop Pro".
Instead click "Choose program".
4. On the next menu, make sure "Paint Shop Pro" is selected from the list of recommended
program, and check "Always use the selected program to open this type of file".
5. Click OK. The file will then open in Paint Shop Pro. Close it.
6. From now on, files of that type will open in Paint Shop Pro. I'd like to add
"forever afterwards", but this IS a Microsoft OS we're talking about...
