I had exactly the same type of problem with my home network. I have and old Win 95A
machine and a brand new Athlon based XP system networked via a LinkSys BEFRS 41 DSL
router/ether switch. I had the same errors, the ability to see the other machines
from the XP box but not be able to connect for file or print sharing. What worked
for me was to create an LMHOSTS file on each machine. Do a search on your PCs for
LMHOSTS and there will be an example for you to follow. Ensure that you save without
a file extension and then reboot the computers. Once I did that everything came in
perfect. Below is and example from the LMHOSTS file I created on my machines:
192.168.1.101 the_bruiser #PRE
192.168.1.100 old_trooper #PRE
I made sure that the files were exactly the same on both machines. Check out this
website for more details: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/mmr_fileprint_share.htm
Good luck!
