Hi, Looks like I missed the boat on this conversation, but I am having the exact
same problem. I have set up two machines with XP and 2000 and can't for the life
of me get either to communicate through a simple peer2peer network. I have a little
sony laptop with XPPro and an old 450AMDK62 tower running 2000. Both machines have
256MB of ram. The 2000 computer has a Linksys lne100tx adapter and the xp laptop
has an Intel pro/100ve.
This setup is as simple as it gets in networking. I am using 192.168.0.20 and .30
respectively with default mask. Both machines are setup in the LOGOS workgroup with
the following protos and services on each: Network client, file and print sharing
and TCP/ip. I have tried netbeui to no avail, but similarly to your situation I
can see the 2000 machine on the xp computer but can't see the xp on the 2000. However,
it does not matter because the xp computer will not let me access the 2000 computer
if I click it in my network places. Keeps giving me an error. Strangely enough
I can ping local loopback and local ip on each machine but can't ping my neighbor.
I don't understand how that can be since the xp machine sees the 2000 machine.
The linksys card in the 2000 computer is enabled and shows no conflicts, however
it appears to be dead in the water. Under "local area connection status" when you
click on the connection to view properties, there is no activity. 0 packet transfer
either way. I have tried every thing from swapping cards to reistalling drivers
and the operating system, nothing seems to work. I installed xp on another partition
on the 2000 machine and everything worked fine so its not a bad NIC. I have been
to linksys to obtaing the latest drivers and MS Windows update support. I have searched
the web left and right and have wound up here. If anyone has a clue I sure would
appreciate some insight as to what the problem is. Thanx.
