Katie: the stability of XP is due in large part to built-in mechanisms to protect
system files such as .sys and .dll. If you change such a file today, XP can change
it back tomorrow, so it can flip-flop just as if it were fighting a virus.
If you are concerned about the suitability of a .sys file then there are tools in
XP you can use:
1. File Signature Verification.
Click Start, Run, then type: sigverif
Choose Start in the dialog box.
System files will be checked for digital signatures and the results displayed.
2. System File Checker.
Log on as a System Administrator.
at the Run, type: cmd
In the Command Prompt, type: sfc /scanonce
All protected system files are scanned to verify that their version numbers link
up with the operating sytem and that they haven't been replaced or corrupted. Restart
to execute.
If your .sys file has been overwritten, it will be replaced with the correct version
by sfc.
Keeping your OS protected with anti-virus updates and scans will help XP do its job,
as will weekly use of your Windows Update on the Start menu.
