Alan,
I have experienced similar problems networking several XP and Win98SE machines.
The XP troubleshooter in help is pretty good. That would be a place to start. It
is more comprehensive and better organized than I could attempt in this reply, so
I will not try and cover everything that is in there.
There is a network setup wizzard in XP that prompts you to make a network setup disk,
which you then run on each other computer (including Win98 machines).
Personal firewalls can block access between computers.
I also installed NETBUI on all our machines (this may just be superstition). NETBUI
is on the WinXP setup CD, but you have to jump through hoops to get it. I would
recommend this as a last resort.
I hope the above is helpufl.
