Alan,
I had two other thoughts to share.
1) Under WinXP, it seems that I frequently have to go into the administrator account,
(open Control Panel,) open Network Connections, select the network connection, and
hit "repair". I do this so often, I put a Network Connections icon on the desktop
of the Administrator account user.
2) Even when the network is working, after a reboot a WinXP machine, the WinXP machine
seems to take longer to connect than a Win98 machine. In other words, right after
reboot, the WinXP machine has not yet connected, but may connect successfully on
its own after 5 minutes or so. (On a Win98 only network, machines would seem to
reconnect after reboot almost immediately.)
I hope this is helpful.
