Manually installing the file doesn't fix the problem as widows installer is unaware the file has been installed. My work around was to manually download the file (in this case): http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/auw2k_3C8035DBB28438CD88AA04C74B64ED642530AD48.exe Then to copy it into the place where windows installer expects it to be using the name it expects: C:\WUTemp\com_microsoft.AU2_2_W2K_5435\auw2k.exe I then re-ran Windows Installer, which then happilly installs the update.
