XP system freeze

I made the mistake of waxing lyrical to a couple of people about how good XP was. I think it was listening at the time, and now my computer is having problems! Basically I am getting full freezes. I can't move the mouse or ctrl+alt+delete - only reset will let me restart. It happens at different times, sometimes at startup, or when using the computer. Always seemingly at random and without any warning. Is it possible that ambient temperature could cause this? It was very humid and warm last night, and when I switched off the pc for a bit, the freeze seemed to be a fair bit longer in coming. Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks.
