I had a very similar problem w/lockups of mouse and keyboard on my XP Pro system.
It had been very trouble free until then. So I restored a Drive Image from before
that did not have Norton AV 2002 on it since I had heard of conflicts with it and
XP. Since that works fine I added AVG antivirus and so far (1 week) no problems.
