Office XP service-pack 1 error 1328!! Help!

I can't seem to update my Office XP with service-pack 1 without getting error 1328
which states something like:
Error 1328. Error applying patch to file C:\program files\Microsoft Office\.
It has probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by this
patch. For more information contact your patch vendor.
Microsoft has a page documenting the error and claims to offer a solution at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q315063
However, I cannot make heads or tails of their solution. I installed Office XP off
of my Office XP CD (non-retail) from an administrator login, and I immediately attempted
to update with the patch from that same login directly after installation. I even
tried uninstalling and reinstalling, to no avail. I get the same error no matter
what.
Can someone PLEASE help me by giving step by step instructions for a layman? Thanks
in advance.
