Sometimes when switching between 2 os's the system doesnt correctly reallocate the hardware irq's try setting to non plug and play and reset escd configuration data (or set to pluga and play if the other way around) select reset escd configuration data to enabled and reboot into XP, then try rebooting into win98 and back again to xp....
