I guess the same the Explorer does for many users - it changes settings by itself.
For example, here on my machine I have a shortcut to Explorer in my quick icons on
the task bar. After I installed Win XP, I put it there. I opened up Explorer via
it, selected the settings I prefer (status bar, Detail, unchecked all those silly
"do not show file extension", "do not show system files" etc. crap) and chose "apply
to all folders". Worked as designed, from then on whenever I opened Explorer, it
had the settings I wanted. But for some silly reason, every now and then I get the
"symbols" view when opening up Explorer, or the status bar suddenly is not shown
anymore. I really cannot figure out WHY Win XP does that, it just does. I *never*
change the settings myself, Windows does it on its own.
