You're entirely right about XP forgetting window settings.

I use List view for all the windows on my system; I can't stand big, goofy icons. 
However, not only does XP "forget" many of my window sizes and positions, certain 
windows keep reverting to Large Icons view. Ack! You'd think MS could've learned 
how to do something so basic by now---or at least provided a tool to fix it when 
it went wrong.

I'm not quite ready to make the leap from Window to Macintosh, as you are. They're 
nice computers, but a lot more dough than I want to spend. And unfortunately, because 
Mac-users comprise only 7% of the PC market, the software available for them is severely 
limited. Good luck, though!
