unable to delete a file

yesterday i tried to fix a bad indexed divx .avi . it was like 600Mb in size and
the divfix program hung up at one time so i had to reboot. when restarted and tried
to delete the file i got "Cannot delete [file] : It is being used by another person
or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." after
which the explorer started to act wickedly - slowed down, hang up ... i tried rebooting
in safe mode, logging as an administrator and deleting the file, alas with no success.
so now i'm feeling helpless stuck with an useless 600Mb file on my system partition
which is small enough to afford the luxury of keeping and not minding the bastard
(.avi). ntfs here/i even started thinking of converting back to fat32, booting from
a diskette and trying removing the file, but that would take much time/need much
space, and i'm not even sure how to convert back to fat32 [glimpsed at the ntfs>fat32
thread and the waters there were unknown to me]. so any/all help would be highly
appreciated.
