I've just gone through a lot of trouble setting up a local server on XP Home Ed.,
and found that PHPTriad installs perfectly right off the bat, no trouble.
I had tried installing Xitami with PHP (Xitami installed without a problem. PHP with
Xitami was another matter), and also PHPDev and EasyPHP (lol. I have been desperate,
as you can see). But PHPTriad is the only one that didn't give me trouble.
PHPTriad 2.x is freeware, but its 3.x version (renamed Sokkit) is available for $19.95.
I bought it, and it was money well spent -- it's preconfigured with Apache/PHP, but
the really cool part is the control panel interface. If you are like me and don't
really know that much about server technology, and just need to get a testing environment
up and running for web design, this is definitely $20 well-spent.
There are modules planned for other scripting languages, also, and the company offers
IM support.
URL for pay version is http://www.sokkit.net/
You can still get the free version at SourceForge, here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/phptriad/
