You can only do it by going into the registry and blowing away all the hide/show 
data.

Start Menu, Run, type: regedit

navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify

delete the IconStreams and PastIconStreams binaries on the right hand side

Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL > Processes tab > select explorer.exe and click End Process
To get your desktop back, choose New Task and type: explorer

Go back to taskbar properties and redo your customization.
