Sometimes it will work with an XP CD made by MS and not the system vendor. However sometimes it won't.. It won't work with a restore CD made by the system vendor for sure. Neither MS or the system vendor will promise a successfull repair in any case.. You can only try and see but always make sure your data is backed up first.. Oh and BTW, you won't get a "free" CD from MS to fix your problem.. It will cost you! C K
