Apache and ASP
There are open source solutions to "link" Apache and ASP.
For those who are ready to drop VBScript and learn Perlscript, Apache::ASP provides
an Active Server Pages port to the Apache Web Server and enables developing of dynamic
web applications with session management and embedded perl code:
see http://www.apache-asp.org/.
Note that there seems to be another solution using Perl, ActiveState's PerlScript
which can be accessed from the homepage of the url above.
I haven't tested those solutions yet, but they seem a good starting point to test
a change from PWS (IIS) to Apache without loosing all your development work in ASP.
As regards connecting to MS SQL server databases, there are several perl scripts
managing it. E.g. see
http://octopus.cdut.edu.cn/~yf17/perlcd/sysadmin/ch07_03.htm.
However, if you switch to Apache, you might also consider switching to php as this
might be more efficient than trying to link Apache and ASP.
Switching from MS solutions to open source solutions may require some initial effort
as these are two totally different worlds. However, it might be worth the learning
effort as, in the end, these are free solutions ported under Windows.
Readers who have some realife experience with these ASP through perl-scripting solutions,
let us know if they're worthy.
Thanks,
Paul
