Connecting camcorder (USB) to computer causes immediate reboot.

Hello all.
The camcorder is a Sony CCD-TRV608. The computer is a P4 2.4 GHz manufactured by
Gateway, with Windows XP Home.
When connected to the computer via a USB cable, the camcorder has the ability to
stream video to the computer. The problem is that when we connect the two together
via the cable, the computer immediately detects the camcorder device, and then the
computer reboots 2 seconds later. When it reboots into Windows, after XP finishes
loading it again detects the camcorder, then reboots two seconds later. This process
is repeated indefinitely -- it never actually finishes detecting & installing the
camcorder.
The instruction manual states that it might be a good idea to remove all other USB
devices when attempting to connect the camcorder. We tried that -- so that the camcorder
was the only USB device connected -- and the result was the same: a quick reboot.
My immediately reaction is that the cause is one of two things: either the camcorder
needs more power than the computer's PSU can provide, or the camcorder is using too
much USB bandwidth. I wouldn't think it's the first of the two, since the camcorder
is plugged into the wall via an AC adapter. I don't know why it would be the second,
however, since it's the only device using USB now!
Has anyone seen anything like this before? We can use any suggestions. The last thing
we want to do is to have to take back a Christmas gift.
Thanks in advance!
