OR... use the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and kill the stupid process called MSMSGS.EXE.
The icon will still show in the tray until you mouse over it, then it will vanish.
Note: You can also go Start > Run > msconfig
then under the Startup tab make sure to uncheck the MSMSGS service so that it will
not run at Startup each time.
