I had two systems, 1 W2K and 1 XP Pro, that had the multiple window explorer problem.
The fix I found by looking at functioning OS PC's, was in the registry Folder key
under HK_Classes_Root
The problem seemed to be a lack of a ddeexec under both the explore and open subkeys.
This ddeexec key is used in several places in the registry. Search for ExploreFolder("%l
to find it. The l in the previous string is a lower case L.
Once a working ddeexec key is found, write down the data and add it to the explore
key in the Folder key in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. There is a "Shell" key that contains
identical data. You can repeat this for the open key. It, however, uses a different
string, ViewFolder, in its ddeexec data string. You will see what is in the example
in the other registry key.
Once I got the ddeexec straightened out, my explorer proceeded to show new folders
in the same window. This proved to be a boon for my small laptop. Folders rapidly
choked up my small display.
Hope this helps others.
I put all this stuff into my Folder
