I agree, Adam. I have stopped the messenger service from starting automatically on my PC and have not seen any impact on MSN Messenger, however I do notice that I don't get the annoying spams any more. In my opinion, switching on the XP firewall has a greater impact on MSN Messenger than the disabling of the messenger service, for example preventing the sending and receiving of files sent via MSN.
