Useless system processes

At any given time, I can open up task manager (I'm using XP) and find at least 25
processes running. Looking right now, there are 30 processes.. I can only identify
the reason for 9 of them. The main energy wasters are spoolsv.exe (~38,000K) and
svchost.exe (there are usually 5 different files totaling up to ~18,000K of memory
use). There a bunch of other ones that take up between 20k and 1,800k of memory: sPDTMONX.exe,
SPEMAI~1.EXE, atiptaxx.exe, sPdevmonx.exe, SPDEVMONSRV.exe, rundll32.exe, lsass.exe,
services.exe, winlogon.exe, wcmdmgr.exe csrss.exe, smss.exe, sPpdpsrv.exe. I have
a feeling that many of these are running needlessly. Does someone here know if any
of these are in fact wasting space and how I can keep them from running?
Thanks in advance.
