I too unsuccessfully tried re-installing XP to get mspaint.exe working again, but
doing so resulted in my losing all my dial-up internet connections! These could not
be re-entered with the New Connection Wizard, since Connect Using a Dial-up Modem
was gray-ed out. The solution to the problem is at http://support.microsoft.com item
329441 --I used Microsoft's workaround method of deleting two registry keys, since
without the internet connection I could not easily use their method of reinstalling
Service Pack 1. I suspect Paint stopped from something on the Web, though a scan
doesn't find any virus.
