If you own a major brand name computer (for example Sony, Gateway, Toshiba, HP, etc..)
then phone their technical support. Each of these companies has a different method
for you to do a resinstall of XP. If this is a generic machine and/or the people
that built it are unavailable for support then you may have to follow the instuctions
here. Bear in mind there are many acceptable ways to install an OS. But this is
the way that I'm familiar with and has worked consistantly for me. Anyone reading
this feel free to add your comments or insights.
First back up anything of importance on your computer. This includes documents,
emails, pictures, financial data, receipts from online purchases, etc.. (Everyone
should do this on a regular basis anyway.)
Once you're confident that you have copies of everything of importance, figure out
what kind of hard disk drive you have. Brand and model. Go to the manufacturer's
web site and download a "tools" or "maintenance" disk from them. There will be instructions
for how to do this on the web site. Make sure you have your WinXP cdrom and "Product
Key" handy. These are included with the boxed set of Windows XP.
Now use the disk you downloaded from the web and follow the instructions to format
your hard disk drive. Once that's done boot your computer from the XP cdrom. Follow
the instructions and it will make a new installation for you from scratch.
During this process you may encounter a few problems along the way. Every situation
is unique. The procedure may go smoothly or maybe not. Be prepared to have your
computer out of comission for a few days while you work on it and ask questions around.
If a few days is too long then consider having a professional do the job for you.
