WindowsXP / Pro printer drivers will not work with Win98/98SE. What you need to
do is delete icon for the printer you have setup in the printer folder. Log into
the internet from "That" computer (the problem one) and download the printer drivers
for win98 for that printer and load them to that machine. From that same win98 machine,
add the printer now as a "network" printer. After this is added from that computer,
now go back to your mainstation (WinXP) computer and search for the printer by "groupname".
Then choose the printer it finds. There is never a "password" requirement to print
a document, even remotely. The only password you would enter would be when you first
log into your PC from a remote location. If you don't install just the win98 files
to only your win98 machine, then your winXP machine will use it's own winxp printer
files and try to share them with your 98se machine. If I'm not making any sense,
just slap me and tell me what is not understood. WinXP printer files should stay
on the xp machine and win98 printer files should stay on the win98 machine.
With WinXP Pro, I had the same trouble. I have a WinXP PC (MAIN) sharing with a
Win98SE PC. It shares the connection fine for roaming the internet and sharing files,
but wouldn't share the printer through the XP machine. Kept coming up with these
environment incompatiblity errors. When I tried to hit that icon that allows you
to choose a box that would allow you to share win98 machine drivers with XP, it would
ask for a disk or directory where the file are. This would always end up with an
encounter problem and would abort the installation. I was always ticked off at that
point, because..I had been on for hours by this time and was getting frustrated.
Go with the flow and tell me how this helped. Write me privately next time and
tell me if this did fix the problem. You must fix it locally, as it can't be fixed
remotely. Just remember, if it works locally, it will work remotely. Test it locally
first and Good Luck!
