I have another tip regarding this matter. Even after doing all the things suggested
(not locking web desktop items and not having web items on the desktop in the first
place) XP may "stick" to the non-transparent setting for desktop icon labels. I have
been able to return to the transparent setting with drop shadows by first unchecking
the "use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" box under System > Advanced
> Performance Settings and then checking it again. This may scramble your desktop
icons a little and you'll have to drag them back where you want them, but the transparent
backdrop and drop shadows will be restored.
