I had this same problem installing programs in XP. Seemed to be exclusive to programs
that used a certain type of Win XP installer. They could never detect .CAB files
that were actually fine and on the CD all along. A change of CD drive didn't make
much of a difference either. The only thing that worked for me was formatting my
hard drive and installing XP again. Everything's back to normal now. What a relief!
Hope this helps.
