I finally solved my laptop to win98 connection problem using a crossover cable.
It turned out that the cable is the problem. I decided to make my own cable last
weekend and it works at the full speed (100mbs or 100base-t). At closer look at
the bad cable seems to indicate that the tx-tx+ wires are not in the same twisted
pair so the signal is not protected from noise. Don't by cheap cable from fry's
electronics!
