I have also been looking for a solution for this problem. I posted the following
on my website.
I have tried EVERYTHING to get it to work properly, but nothing is fixing this
problem. I am trying to run Counter-Strike 1.5 using OpenGL. I recently got a new
hard-drive, and thus lost all my drivers and settings. I know I had a similar problem
when I first got my video card, but I can't remember how I got it to work. The problem
started by just freezing and skipping the sound like a scratched CD, and now it's
giving me this error:
Counter-Strike: cstrike.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x0f8814n4" referenced memory at "0x0000002". The memory could
not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
My system is:
- Athlon 1.1gHz
- Chaintech GeForce4 MX 440
- 256MB RAM
- Windows XP
I have:
- reinstalled the out-of-the-box Chaintech drivers
- installed the updated Chaintech drivers from their website
- installed the drivers from the nVidia website
- turned off v-sync
- installed DirectX 9.0a
- installed all Windows updates, including SP1
- updated my CPU to AGP controller driver
- uninstalled Counter-Strike and reinstalled
- punched myself in the face a few times
I understand there is some sort of XP-Athlon-DirectX problem, but I don't know
how this is resolved. However, I am also trying to run CS in OpenGL so it shouldn't
be the issue. However, I have come to a brick wall. I don't know what to do next.
And finally:
I think I fixed it! I've only played a few rounds, but I had no problems at
all. From what I can gather, the nVidia drivers weren't installing properly.
I uninstalled the drivers from the add/remove list (which is strange as I'd never
seen them there before) and deleted the directory in my C drive. When I was uninstalling
drivers, my resolution wasn't changing, thus leading me to believe my drivers weren't
actually uninstalling correctly. After I did that and rebooted, my resolution was
at 800x600 which it should have been but hadn't been changing to previously. I also
had an nVidia Media Center icon in my system tray which wasn't there before. I once
again turned off v-sync.
I played about 5 rounds no problems, and noticed that the game play was much smoother
as it has previously always flickered white when there was a lot of movement on the
screen. Hopefully, this will be the end of my troubles.
Conclusion: Do NOT install Chaintech drivers. The nVidia XP driver I installed
is located here.
I actually got this same error tonight, but only after playing for about an hour.
I guess that is better than after every two rounds.
