For example, Western Digital calls theirs Data Lifeguard Tools and Maxtor calls theirs PowerMax. Other HDD mfr tools can be had at their support web sites. Run the non-destructive tests, which are similar to the scandisk or checkdisk programs that come with Windows. The advantage here is that you can run these diagnostic tools from a floppy or two before attemtping to load an OS, and IMO these tools should be more thorough and more accurate than what comes with Windows.
