Hey Folks...I know this is a pretty old thread.
and most of it is just "Thanks for the tip" messages.
I'll first chime in with "Thanks for the tip!"
I had wondered about it before, but tonight I *HAD TO* install a driver, and this
saved the day.
As for additional useful information, Microsoft has a KB article about this issue:

This article provides a link to a binary which fixes the problem. In the true spirit
of Microsoft, it doesn't tell you what's going on behind the scenes. (Presumably
the above registry modifications!)
The one benefit to this binary from MS -- If you're uncomfortable modifying your
registry, now you don't have to.
