There article you referred to relates to Messenger Services. XP also has Windows Messenger and a down-loadable cousin MSN Messenger is also available. Are you confused. Messenger Service can turned off, and MSN Messenger can be uninstalled in add & remove programs, and Windows Messenger can be uninstalled, or Hidden. A google search will have info on how to do it.
