According to the User's Guide for your computer, the System Recovery CD included
with your Sony is a one-trick pony: All it can do is reformat the HDD and reinstall
XP and the programs that came with the computer. You'll lose everything on your
HDD if you do this.
OTOH, the application and driver CDs are capable of reinstalling individual applications
and drivers.
Here's my suggestion:
1. Borrow a genuine MS XP CDROM from a friend.
2. Set your computer to boot from CDROM, insert the XP CD, and restart to boot from
it.
3. At the Welcome to Windows Setup screen, press F10 to start the Recovery Console.
You may want to review information about the Recovery Console at this MS KB article:
Description
of the Windows XP Recovery Console
4. Provide the built-in Administrator account password.
5. Copy a fresh copy of the ntoskrnl.exe file from the CD onto your HDD using this
command:
copy [d:]\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
Notes: this command assumes "c:\windows" is where XP is loaded on your hard drive,
adjust accordingly if your computer is different; [d:] stands for the letter of the
cdrom drive in which the XP CD is located; the file "ntoskrnl.ex_" is a compressed
file as indicated by the last character being an underscore character; when in Recovery
Console, the "copy" command automatically expands compressed files on the XP CD to
the HDD.
Type "Exit" to close the recovery console and restart your computer. Take the CD
out of the drive so that it doesn't start from the CD again.
If the problem was simply a corrupted ntoskrnl.exe file, your computer should be
back to normal.
Clean up: reset your computer's startup sequence back to the way it was; start Help
and Support to find out how to run Checkdisk and the Signature Verification Tool,
and run them to make sure nothing else is wrong.
As far as backup goes, there are two approaches you can take: traditional backup
and drive imaging software. I would recommend a combination of both.
For more info, the latest issue of PC
Magazine has a review of several backup and recovery programs and tactics.
