I struggled with this for 2 hours myself. And after all that... I finally figured
it out. THE STUPID SOUND THEME SETTING WAS OFF!! Try going to Start/Control Panel/Sounds
and make sure that your sound settings are set to Windows Default (or one of your
choice). After reinstalling XP mine was set to nothing.
