I have solved similar problems on several computers (Compaq notebooks and desktops) going to Windows Update and installing Service Pack 1 BEFORE joining the NT domain (we have DHCP here and the machines get an address and are able to reach the Internet before the network is completely configured - I mean with no domain/password)
