Check to see if you have the Windows XP HotFix Q811493 patch installed in your computer
(you can check by going into control panel > add/remove programs). If installed,
the patch creates immense slowdown on windows xp systems, creating the use of 90-150%
more system resources. Delete the patch and you should see windows return to normal
speed.
This security patch was used to prevent a hacker from raising his privilege level
on a vulnerable system. However, he would need physical access to the machine, via
the node or a local intranet. This patch is not necessary for home based users
