I resolved the problem on my PC by disabling the SSDP Discovery Service. My PC is
a stand alone PC using XP pro. This service is only used on Networked PCs to check
for Plug & Play hardware over the network. My hard drive is now silent. If I restore
this service, my hard drive goes wild and the Sytem Event Viewer shows frequent starting
and stopping of SSDP. I cannot force SSDP to start as it starts and stops immediately.
Disabling it has no ill effect on a stand alone PC.
